A postdoctoral research associate / scholar position is available in the Washington University Pain Center at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.  Dr. Jose Moron-Concepcion is seeking a highly motivated individual to pursue studies focused on defining (1) the roles of glutamate receptors in the mechanisms underlying opioid-induced synaptic plasticity, and (2) the mechanisms underlying opioid dependence and relapse to drug-seeking behavior.   The research program involves a combination of electrophysiological, behavioral models of drug dependence, live cell imaging and molecular-genetic approaches. This position also provides the opportunity to gain expertise in molecular physiology and the determination of the role of glutamate and ion channels in the mechanisms underlying opioid-induced synaptic plasticity. In addition, this project will allow the development of imaging skills with epifluorescence and confocal microscopy.  The focus will be on the professional growth and development necessary to transition to an independently-funded faculty researcher.

Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate should hold a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree, possess a strong background in cellular electrophysiology, particularly the field recordings and  whole-cell voltage-clamp techniques, and the analyses of electrophysiological data. In addition, experience with behavioral animal models of dependence (conditioned place preference, i.v. self-admin, etc.) is highly desirable. Experience/publications using the whole-cell variation of the patch-clamp technique and behavioral models of drug dependence.
Preferred Qualifications

* Prior experience with surgical procedures in rodents for intracranial administration of drugs is preferred.
* Experience with fluorescent imaging in single cells with either or both epifluorescence microscopy and/or confocal microscopy preferred.
* Experience working with glutamate receptors (AMPAR, NMDAR, mGluARs) is preferred.
* Completed or currently completing post-doctoral fellowship position.
Salary will be based on NIH guidelines.

As a key member of the Pain & Migraine Disease Area Biology Department, the successful candidate will conduct experiments to support preclinical drug discovery efforts at different stages of development including target identification and validation, lead identification and lead optimization. As an individual contributor, the successful candidate will generate and integrate data from in vitro and in vivo experiments towards the discovery and validation of pharmacological mechanism of action, target engagement, pharmacodynamic, efficacy and safety biomarkers of drug candidates.The successful candidate will participate on/lead multidisciplinary teams aimed at identifying novel treatments for chronic pain and migraine. The successful candidate will demonstrate the behaviors, expertise, organization and technical capabilities to deliver success on discovery programs as well as executing on functional business plans and contributing to the development of departmental objectives.

 

Qualifications

 Education:
• A PhD or MD or similar training in neuroscience, pharmacology or a closely related subject with a minimum of 4 years of experience in academia or pharmaceutical industry experience
Required Experience and Skills:

• A strong track record of achievement and experience of working on discovery programs aimed at identifying novel treatments for chronic pain or related diseases.
• Successful candidates must demonstrate an ability to innovate in the laboratory using in vitro electrophysiology, biochemical and/or molecular biology assay skills.
• Demonstrated ability to develop practical research strategies, translate strategy into experiments, thrive in a team environment, the ability to communicate clearly and candidly and a proven ability to create and work within high performance teams in a matrix organization.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

• Track record of high quality research in the pain field
• Subject matter expertise in preclinical research approaches (behavior and/or electrophysiology) related to in vivo models of chronic pain.
• The ability to scientifically direct members of the department.
• Exposure to clinical development programs.
